Taxes: The necessary evil

Is there a better way to fund our government?

The 2018 Legislature has, effectively, killed Senator Dan Watermeier's bill, LB44, which would have required out-of-state online retailers to collect sales taxes on purchases made by Nebraskans. The argument was that brick and mortar stores in our state couldn't compete with those online stores because the required addition of sales tax to purchases set them at a dissadvantage.

I would suggest that we get rid of the sales tax altogether. That would certainly level the playing field. However, since our state government would still need to fund itself, and the money would have to come from somewhere, taxation, of some form would still be required. The question is, which form of taxation would be equitable?

I would like to hear what the residents of LD38 think about this matter. Please email me at thomasosbornld38@gmail.com with your suggestions.
